Flight of the Earls 400th - September 2007
|

Hugh O'Neill, Prince of Ulster,
Earl of Tyrone, Chief of the Name.
|
On the 13th and 14th September 2007 a number of
events will take place to commemorate the Flight of the Earls in 1607.
The Flight of the Earls marked the informal end to the Gaelic Order in
Ireland due to the fact that the Chiefs who left to raise an army in
Spain never returned to flight against the English occupation of their
lands. It was in this context that the O'Higgins lost their position as
nobles and poets in several Chiefly houses including O'Conor, McDermott,
McDonagh and O'Doherty. Full details of the commemoration in Rathmullen,
Co. Donegal are available on www.flightoftheearls.ie
The highlight of the ceremonies will be the Walk of the Chiefs and
Clans which will be led by the Chief Herald of Ireland at 3pm on the
14th September. The O'Higgins Clan will be represented at this event and
all those associated with the Clan are invited to walk behind the
specially designed O'Higgins Flag which has been made for the occasion.
Please email info@ohigginsclan.com
if you require assistance in travelling to Rathmullen.

Higginsbrook Used For New Film on Jane Austen
- March 2007
|

|
Higginsbrook House near Trim in
Co. Meath was built about 1720 and originally belonged to a couple of
brothers of the name Higgins who's origins are unclear. Recently the
house was chosen by Manus Hingerty as the location for the film Becoming
Jane about the life of Jane Austen. When he read the script for Becoming
Jane Manus realised that Higginsbrook would be ideal; a four
bedroomed house with a large garden and the right amount of Eighteenth
Century grandeur. 'It's a remarkably small house,' manus notes. 'It's
smaller on the inside. Proportionately the house is big, but the reality
of the house is what appealed to the designer straight away, and the
fact that everything could be contained within one area.'

O'Higgins, Lord of Ballynary - April 2006
|
An Taoiseach, . Bertie Ahern, T.D. |
A special message has been sent by An
Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D., to The O'Higgins, Lord of Ballynary in
conjunction with the celebrations to commemorate the 90th anniversary of
the 1916 Rising.
On the 24th of April 1916 Pádraig Pearse, Commander in Chief of the
Army of the Irish Republic led about 150 soldiers to the General Post
Office (GPO) in Dublin where he formally proclaimed the Republic of
Ireland and launched the Irish War of Independence.
Like many others The O'Higgins of Ballynary can claim a link to the
1916 Rising in that his grandmother, Mary Madam O'Higgins (1879-1946)
was a supporter of Cuman na mBán (Women's Army) and his father Patrick
J. O'Higgins (1907-1974), only a boy at the time, acted as a
"runner" for the Irish forces during the War of
Independence. |

Common Ancestor Confirmed - November 2005
|

|
The first results from our DNA project are now available and
show that two lines of O'Higgins share a common ancesor. The samples which were
tested at the University of Arizona confirmed that Mr. Thomas Higgins of New
York, a descendent of Laurence Higgins who emigrated from Summerhill, Co. Meath
in the mid 19th century shares a common ancestor with The Clan Chief, The Hon.
Thomas O'Higgins NSC, Lord of Ballynary whose grandparents also lived in
Summerhill, Co. Meath. The tests can not tell us when this common ancestor lived
but due to the fact that both of the men tested share the same surname and can
trace their ancestors back to the same townland in Ireland there is a strong probability that the common ancestor lived within the
last 300 years. Further details on the O'Higgins DNA project are available here:
DNA Project.
