Dr. James O'Higgins-Norman FRSA MGSI

 James NormanDr. James O'Higgins-Norman is a Lecturer in the School of Education Studies at Dublin City University where he is Chair of the Graduate Diploma in Education programme. Since joining DCU in 2000 he has led the development of post-graduate programmes in teacher education and pastoral care.

He is the author of a number of books including Ethos and Education in Ireland (New York: Peter Lang, 2003) and At the Heart of Education (Dublin: Veritas, 2004) as well as several research reports on pastoral care in second-level schools. His articles have appeared in several academic journals including Oideas: Journal of the Deparment of Education & Science and Irish Education Studies.

His research includes suicide among adolescents, homophobic bullying and other aspects of pastoral care in schools. He has presented conference papers on related topics in Ireland, Australia, the UK, Europe and the USA. In 2008 he was an Honourary Research Fellow at the Australian Catholic University in Ballarat, Victoria.

James was also a member of the NCCA Sub-Committee on Interculturalism in Education and a Ministerial Advisory Group on Men in Primary Education. His current research is a collaboration in the area of student behaviour in second-level schools and it is funded by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at DCU.

James was ordained in 1994 for the Archdiocese of Dublin and ministers at weekends as parish chaplain in St. Jude's Church in Templeogue. He is a keen genealogist and is a member of the Genealogical Society of Ireland tracing his roots on his maternal line through the O'Higgins clan and on his paternal line to the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland. In 2006 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts (FRSA) in London.
