Dr. Therese Higgins, Conservationist

Dr. Gemma Therese Higgins is a Consultant Ecologist specialising in woodland environments. She was raised in Clonsilla in Co. Dublin where she attended Blakestown Community School before going on to Trinity College where she took an honours BA degree in Botanical Sciences. In 2001 she completed a PhD in which she specialised in the occurrence of canopy gaps in some semi-natural Irish woodlands and the natural regeneration of tree species therein.

Therese is a former national Chairperson of the Irish Wildlife Trust and is now local Chairperson of Groundforce in Kerry. She is fcurrently working for Trinity College Dublin on a research project in the Killarney National Park aimed at monitoring vegetation change inside and outside experimental exclosures in native woodlands of international importance. The broader aim is to promote informed management and conservation in the National Park.

Therese lives near Killarney with her husband Chris Barron and daughter Martha.
